Your
Role as a Student
Here
are some important tips that will help you get the most out of
our Martial Arts Education Program:
Make
sure you attend class regularly. Consistent training
is key to learning the material required to advance in rank and
developing strong Martial Arts skills. If a you are going to miss
a class for any reason, call our studio so your instructor can
establish alternative arrangements.
Apply the five principles: Effort, Etiquette, Sincerity,
Self-Control and Character.
Practice your material outside of the dojo in addition
to your private lessons and group classes. You will progress quickly
if your private lessons are spent on refining current techniques
and learning new ones. It is impossible to remember all of your
material and execute it well in your private lessons without having
practiced at home.
Review your USSD Student Manual and DVD to internalize the five
basic principles, five animals, history
of Shaolin Kempo, methods for meditation,
optimal nutrition, and descriptions of stances, blocks, strikes,
defensive maneuvers, Katas and Pinans. (Remember that this manual
is a tool for you, but does not replace the instruction you receive
in your private lessons. It is not appropriate to teach yourself
techniques that you have not been shown by your Instructor.)
If you learn a technique that is not listed in the USSD Student
Manual, write it down in a notebook or on the blank pages in the
back of your student manual.
Memorize and practice the fifteen code of conduct
rules of dojo etiquette. Support your dojo
by applying yourself in class, being a positive role model
for other students, attending and helping with dojo events,
ordering your Martial Arts equipment from your Sensei and helping
the dojo in whatever way you can. Remember that we are like a
family - we all look out for each other and by doing so, help
each of us achieve our goals.
